This is because it takes two to three hours to metabolize and pass through the blood-brain barrier where it needs to be. Try taking it three hours before you want to fall asleep, then give it three weeks to work.

Can try warm milk, Chamomile tea or melatonin along w light reading, warm bath or lavender scent.

Valarian root (used by native americans), l-tryptophan (turkey), and melatonin are useful. There is a supplement, alteril, which contains all three. All experts recommend quiet time prior to sleep, no tv or videos.

Maybe!: The idea is that the tryptophan (found in turkey as well!) helps you to relax by increasing serotonin in the brain.  A glass of warm milk to help you fall asleep has never been proven, but if you feel it helps then it probably does!  its not harmful, just don't drink too much or you will wake up all night having to go to the bathroom!

Short term ok: Benadryl (diphenhydramine) should not be used long term for insomnia. It may get you to sleep but over time it will disrupt your deep sleep or rem sleep. That could be detrimental to your health.

Sleep: The active ingredient in rexall sleep aid is Diphenhydramine (benadryl). Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is an anti-histamine and, as the name implies, the counteract the effect of histamines. Histamine is a neurotransmitter associated with wakefulness and vigilance. If you counteract it, it causes drowsiness and sleep.
I would use it only as needed, though.
