Not necessarily: Often nodes enlarge in reaction to inflammation or infection. However, one can't know if nodes are enlarged due to a malignancy or other causes based only on if they have changed size over 10 months. Recommend assessment.

can you get enlarged lymph nodes in your neck because of cancer somewhere else? or can it be because i have pressed my neck a lot?

Yes: Blood cancer or head and neck cancer or metastatic can cause neck lymphadenopathy. Infections can also cause lymph node

if enlarged lymph nodes in neck are because of cancer somewhere else would it have to be in an area close to the neck?

Accepted Answer

Yes and no...: Neck lymph nodes may become enlarged with tumors of the head and neck, such as squamous cell carcinoma of the throat. &amp;#40;Smokers are prone to this problem.&amp;#41; This is because the lymphatic channels in the neck will filter through neck nodes before draining into a larger vessel in the chest.  In contrast, lymphoma is a tumor of lymph nodes themselves, and can cause enlargement of any node.

my 2 year old son have multiple enlarged lymph nodes in his neck for 4 months, the largest one is  3.2 cm. he doesnt feel sick or look sick , hes still very energetic, do you think this could be cancer?

Accepted Answer

No: The risk of lymphatic cancer at that age is miniscule. Most are simple reactive lymph nodes that sift the body serum to remove debris. Vaccination. illnesses, throat infection, local bug bites or skin rashes often trigger transient enlargement. Occasionally a note becomes infected &amp; needs to be drained, but not commonly. Neck nodes ore often noticed since they are not buried in fat or tissue.

Maybe: This would depend on how advanced the tumor is.  If it is a small minimally invasive tumor it is unlikely that enlarged lymph nodes have tumor deposits within them.  

Most of the time lymph nodes are enlarged because they are simply reacting to an infection or other process and not because one has cancer.

Probably not: I think it's just your healthy immune system working to fight off infections. The fact that they are freely movable is reassuring.  Cancer (lit, 'the crab') tends to send out tentacles that tie tissues down. Also the fact they're not growing is reassuring. Relax, and enjoy your life (safely, of course).

i have sarcoidosis since 2010. i have enlarged lymph nodes in my neck since 26 january.  my face itches a lot.  i had a cancer tumor removed - oral.

See a surgeon: Ct scans are fantastic tests but they identify a lot of "things" outside of what we may be looking for. You cannot isolate one finding-an enlarged lymph node-and get good advice about what to do. We need to ask a lot of questions, do a thorough examination+/-blood tests & review the ct scan before making a formal recommendation. Unfortunately, no short-cuts allowed in this situation.

Wait and watch: If three different specialist do not feel the need to do a biopsy, it would be reasonable to wait and watch. If the nodes double in size you should re-contact your primary care doctor.

Accepted Answer

Likely benign: Given that the lymph node is less than 1 cm in size and has been stable for many years it is very likely benign. It does not meet the criteria for biopsy. At this point, the risks of the biopsy are felt to be greater than the possible benefit of the biopsy. If the lymph node gets larger, then it may be appropriate to perform a biopsy.
