This depends on the : severity of the condition along with how long the symptoms have been occuring already in addition to any underlying issues like diabetes which could also affect the prognosis.   An ENG/NCV or nerve study may help but best to ask your surgeon based on your history and clinical examination.

Foreign body: The simple answer is yes. Steel wool can easily splinter and get a piece into your skin. If ghat happens you can experience symptoms like you describe. If just sore just watch, if redness and more soreness develops you may need an antibiotic at ghat time. Happy cleaning!

Cause vs Effect: I would not expect carpal tunnel syndrome itself to cause a visibly swollen wrist.  Rather, i suspect you may have wrist swelling due to some other cause (trauma, arthritis, fluid retention, etc) that is predisposing you to compress the median nerve and cause carpal tunnel.  Consult your primary doctor to find the underlying cause, and the swelling and pain might both be improved!

Carpel Tunnel: Carpal tunnel syndrome typically starts gradually with a vague aching in your wrist that can extend to your hand or forearm. Common carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms include: tingling or numbness, pain radiating or extending, and a sense of weakness in your hands and a tendency to drop objects.

See your surgeon: This may be normal scar tissue ormay be an indication that more therapy is recommended. Your surgeon will surely want to know about this.

Possibley: It can continue to have mild swelling indefinitely depending on how you have healed, how much scar tissue developed, how successful the surgery and how much you currently use it. If you see any signs of infection or blood clot (heat, fever, increased heart rate, chills, etc), see your doctor immediately.With contionued swelling at seven to eight weeks, i would recommend follow up with your surgeon.

Nerves : Nerves control blood flow, so your symptoms are consistent with carpal tunnel syndrome, which is a stuctural, geneticly mediated (you were programmed to get it at birth) compression of the nerve.  Swelling (e.g. With pregnancy) can bring out more symptoms, but does not cause the problem.  I'm not aware the contraceptives cause symptoms.

Varies: Recovery from carpal tunnel syndrome varies based upon the individual and surgical technique used.  In surgery, the transverse carpal ligament is divided, which can lead to activity related pain around the thumb, this is almost always temporary,  you may want to cut back your activities for the short term until you are doing better.  If you dont get better soon, sometimes therapy can help.

Carpal tunnel: Carpal tunnel syndrome is characterized by hand pain and recurrent numbness or "pins and needle" sensations in the thumb, index, middle finger and the lateral aspect of the ring finger. It may be triggered by repetitive use, like driving or keyboard typing. Certain conditions may predispose to its appearance.  Wearing a wrist cock- up splint is very effective. Surgery reserved for severe cases.
