i've had severe lower back pain for three days now and i'm using a heating pad, it seems to help, what else can i do?

Get a diagnosis: Severe back pain can have more than one cause, some of which are not so benign. A 50 year-old female with sudden onset of severe back pain lasting for 3 days should visit her doctor to find out what the cause may be. Having said that, if heat packs are helping, it may suggest a musculoskeletal etiology. Regardless, this form of back pain in this age group requires a doctor evaluation.

: Are you sure you do not have a first degree burn from the heat pad? Asking somebody to look at your back to see if there is skin redness (erythema). If yes, you have first degree burn due to the heat pad. If the back skin is normal, only the area is swollen and tender, you should be evaluated by a doctor. Otherwise, low back pain is very common, taking tylenor or advil as needed for a couple days.

Hello. : Hello. I don't know if your pain is chronic or acute. Sometimes having hot  water  against the muscles can help to relax them (shower head on pulsate mode or jacuzzi).  If you are having neck pain, you might to ensure that your chair, computer set up etc, at home and at work are ergonomically correct. I do not know what pain medications you are taking  but Flexeril (cyclobenzaprine hcl) helps to relax muscles.  If you want quick relief medical acupuncture is very helpful.
