Get a diagnosis: Severe back pain can have more than one cause, some of which are not so benign. A 50 year-old female with sudden onset of severe back pain lasting for 3 days should visit her doctor to find out what the cause may be. Having said that, if heat packs are helping, it may suggest a musculoskeletal etiology. Regardless, this form of back pain in this age group requires a doctor evaluation.

Depends on cause: Most common cause of back pain is from lumbar strain which can be treated conservatively as you are doing. If the pain continues or is severe, you should get an evaluation by a healthcare professional. The treatment ultimately depends on the cause of your back pain. Good luck.
