Atherosclerotic : Ulcerated plaque in the ascending aorta can embolize material and cause TIA or cva.

No: Usually a TIA would not show up on a CT scan.Depending on the scanner and how big a stroke is and what kind of stoke,a CT will show a stroke if it happened .A MRI with/without contrast would be more sensitive.

cause of first time seizure today? mom had covid 2 months ago, given remdesivir, history of high cholestoral, mini strokes. doctors found nothing on ct scan and bloodwork. has been taking magnesium, fish oil, red yeast rice, garlic pills, vitamins?

: MRI is more detailed it may show a new stroke when CT does not. Stroke even past or any brain injury can be a source. Get  blood work and check on mg ,calcium potassium phosphate levels. Would also stop all supplements at this time.  EEG   especially if 24-72  hours  would show location of  seizure .  Need to distinguish non epileptic from epileptic F/u /w/ neurology.

No: Numbness in the head may not be tia/ you may have to look for other causes such as neuropathy, anemia, B12 deficiencies etc. You need a thorough evaluation with a neurologist.

Yes: Mri is very good at seeing previous strokes, much better than a ct scan.

Accepted Answer

It is possible: Sometimes a lacunar stroke does not appear on CT - at least for a small lacunar stroke.  An MRI of the brain would be a more useful tool to determine if a stroke has occurred.  A CT scan is less costly, and should always be done to evaluate stroke (for bleeding) but it may not see small changes, sometimes even 3 days later.

Variable, see below: Transient ischemic attack is brief focal neurological event, lasting less than 20 minutes, with usually full return to baseline.  Stroke permanent neurological deficit, which may improve a bit over weeks to months.  Tia often not seen on either scan.  First few hrs, cat may miss stroke, but MRI software will likely pickup quite early.

CT: You should discuss this with the doctors most familiar with all of your data. In absence of more data a 'narrow' 4th ventricle statement doesn't  mean a lot.

TIA and CT scan: On a CT or MRI scan, the brain will appear normal if the diagnosis is TIA.  TIA is a clinical diagnosis, tests only support this diagnosis by excluding alternative possibilities.
