about 3 years about my husband was rushed into hospital with serve stomach pain. his colon had ruptured and was diagnosed with diverticulitis. he is having the same symptoms and says he will wait to see the doctor tomorrow, should i send him to hopsi?

: It is possible that he has the pain this time for a different reason. However, given his history and the similarity of the symptoms, it is absolutely advisable that he seeks in-person medical advice and evaluation as soon as possible.

is it possible for a diverticulitis rupture with an ostomy bag after surgery?

Accepted Answer

Possible: It only requires one pocket to leak to cause trouble.  Unless your surgeon resected all diseased segment (not recommended) it is possible to have recurrent infection-even rupture.  When was the surgery? It may be residual infection that will eventually clear.

a friend s colon ruptured, wears a bag now , doc. told her was cause she ate a lot of salad.  does it mean u can't have that w/diverticulitis?

If you have: Diverticulitis, an actual infection that developed in a diverticulum, you should be on low residue diet.  If you have diverticulosis without inflammation, general recommendation is a high residue diet to relax hypertrophic muscles that caused them in the first place.  Does that make sense?

No sign of rupture: If diverticulitis ruptures, it is typically associated with either local or diffuse abdominal pain, worse when you press on the abdomen, but not bruising. Sounds like a trip to her doctors treating the diverticulitis is in order or a more complete evaluation. If not being treated, head to primary care or urgent care. Hope this helps!

Yes, usually: There are always extenuating circumstances, but since the medic can often provide life-sustaining treatments en route to the hospital (and since there is an inherent risk in driving to the hospital in this state) we recommend alerting EMS in such circumstances.

If you have fever or abdominal pain, you should be evaluated as soon as possible, as diverticulitis is due to perforation of the colon, and can lead to serious complications if left untreated.
