does umbilical hernia repair cause diastasis recti?

Not usually: The diastasis recti is a separation of the rectus muscles of the abdomen as they move laterally (away from the midline).  This causes a large buldge in the front of the abdomen especially when you sit up.  The underlying fascia is intact, where a hernia is  separated.

Abdominal hernia?: With either an umbilical hernia or diastasis recti (separation of the abdominal muscles with resultant essential hernia) any form of workouts with the possible exception of brisk walking can aggravate the hernias in both locations and make repair more difficult.

Yes, but no surgery : Is better. Diastasis recti is a lateral spreading of the muscle and not associated with an abdominal wall defect. All surgery carries risk, but in this case, the benefit is only aesthetic   you are better off doing abdominal exercises to tone the muscle. As for the hernia, that carries risk if no surgery is performed, so there may be a benefit. It's best to see a surgeon to fully discuss this.

First make sure: you need surgery for diastasis of rectus muscle , fees  for procedure and amount insurance company allows is variable from location to location insurance policy to policy  . Speak to your family doctor will help you by referring to right surgeon , then find out .

Not recommended: A surgery could be done to remove a portion of the fascia and reqpproximate the rectus muscles, however this is not recommended as you would be at risk for then developing a hernia in the future.

Ventral hernia is a hernial sac with abdominal contents resulting from an abdominal wall defect causing an isolated discrete mass

: Diastasis= spread apart; Recti= the muscles involved that are spread apart. This is a description/label of what is evident on exam. It means the abdominal strap muscles in the mid abdomen have a separation down the midline. A person with this may also have a hernia. I suppose you could find a surgeon who could go in and pull the strap muscles closer together but most would not.

Umbilical hernia: An umbilical hernia is not diastasis recti. These hernia are usually congenital unless you have had a prior umbilical incision. The most frequent cause of diastasis in pregnancy, though chronic straining could cause it. You need evaluated for the bloating.

Options: Since it has been 3 years since your last surgical evaluation, one option is to re-visit with your surgeon to see if things have changed or improved, or get another surgical opinion. Abdominal wall diastasis often does not respond to surgery unless extensive plastic surgery abdominal wall reconstruction and rectus muscle repositioning is used.  Laparoscopic hernia surgery can be an option for some.
