A member asked:

Good morning doctors. my 60 year-old friend was diagnosed with diastasis recti. he thought that he may have a hernia. could you please explain what is diastasis recti? is it a serious condition? can it be treated?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Diastasis= spread apart; Recti= the muscles involved that are spread apart. This is a description/label of what is evident on exam. It means the abdominal strap muscles in the mid abdomen have a separation down the midline. A person with this may also have a hernia. I suppose you could find a surgeon who could go in and pull the strap muscles closer together but most would not.
