Thyroid function: It depends on how you respond to variability in your thyroid function.  Dessicated thyroid is known for its variability in thyroid hormone concentration from pill to pill. If you take too much, you might stay the same weight, gain, or, lose depending on your caloric intake and energy expenditure.  Studies have not shown any benefit when compared to levothyroxine.

Yes, but des. has T3 (liothyronine): T4 is the same exact chemical whether it is from dessicated or synthetic thyroid. Not likely: Desiccated thyroid taken orally will act like thyroid replacement therapy, but without the fine control possible with conventional medications.  If you need thyroid replacement, stick to the medication prescribed by your doctor.

Change thyroid med: Hypothyroidism, underactive thyroid, is always treated the same way. Find a thyroid supplement that is well tolerated and find the right dose (may take months) that brings you into a euthyroid (normal) state, then check levels every 6-12 months, to make sure, new dose is not needed. If treated properly, there are no side effects from the supplement; there are many brands (synthetic and natural).

Go Soon: First, dessicated thyroid hormone is rarely used anymore &amp; most docs, especially for a slightly underactive thyroid would use LT4 (thyroxine) and if necessary &amp; experienced in its use add T3 (liothyronine) if needed.  A new lump could be anything from a simple cyst under the skin, a growing thyroid cyst to a thyroid nodule needing eval. If it grew fast enough to notice a change it need evaluation!

Hyperthyroid: Hopefully, it means that the medication is controlling the overactive thyroid.  Follow closely with your physician for blood tests to make sure that it doesn't go too far the other direction and you end up with an underactive thyroid.

Usually not: Usually, a person with hyperthyroidism has too much thyroid hormone in her body. One would take Synthroid (thyroxine) (synthetic hormone) to make up for a lack of enough thyroid hormone due to HYPOthyroidism. A person with HYPOthyroidism who becomes hyperthyroid due to taking too high of a dose of Synthroid (thyroxine) might be asked to take Synthroid (thyroxine) (at a lower dose) even though she is temporarily hyperthyroid.
