what's the difference between dental filings and dental caps?

Size and design: A filling is generally a smaller restoration placed inside a tooth the same visit decay or fractured part of tooth is treated.  A cap or crown usually covers the entire or most of the tooth and is sent out to a dental laboratory to be fabricated. (some dentists have a machine to make crown in office while you wait).

what dental cap material lasts the longest? i'm not real concerned about what they look like, but i do want to choose the kind that last the longest.

Most : Most cast dental restorations are expected to last at least 10 years. All well fitting restorations can last much longer.

But from a wear and tear standpoint, a full cast gold restoration has no chance of porcelain fracture, and the thin, adapted margins are very kind the the gum and bone tissue around the teeth.

Maybe...: 3m lava dental crowns are a translucent ceramic  crown. There are many brands of ceramic crowns of which lava is but one. I am not familiar with the term "ultra-translucent" being used for a specific brand of ceramic crowns.

Maybe: See the expert in this field -- a prosthodontist. Much depends on the desired result, the tooth arrangement and position, the bite, how much tooth is left and is it solid, etc.... See the expert. Good luck.

Costly investment: I have had parents foot the bill for the expense of a single porcelain tooth, a central incisor, for cosmetic reasons. The idea of putting that investment into kids who often need 8-12 caps on teeth that are shed is a bit much.The position in the gum line needs to be preserved to allow space for emerging permanent teeth or some would just toss the decayed teeth & be done.

Two issues here: There are two factors to consider when answering this question: 1-Strength of crown: a gold crown cannot break; any one with a ceramic surface can break although very small percentage. 2- Any tooth with a crown can decay around margins if poor oral hygiene or high sugar or acid intake.  Each type of crown has advantages and disadvantages. Speak to your own dentist as to which is best for you.

You : You should go back to see your dentist.  The proper name for a temporary crown is a provisional restoration.  It is meant to test your tooth, gums, and environment prior to the final crown.  Unless surgery was done, this should feel totally normal.  
Please call your dentist and inform him or her about the symptoms.  
If the pain persists, you might have problems with the final work as well.

can temporary dental caps cause gums to change color? i have a temporary cap in on the left side of my mouth at the moment, and the gum around the cap is purplish/black color. it doesn't hurt, but the color change does concern me. is this normal with temp

It : It sounds like the gum tissue is inflammed. Did you just have the temp place a day or two ago, or is it there for a while?

If not polished, it could be trapping food and bacteria.

There is a very slight chance you are allergic to the monomer in the acrylic. Call your dentist to have him take a look.

Burning tongue: This reaction usually happens when the needle comes close to or rubs against the nerve to the tongue. While not common, the possibility exists with every injection in this area.
I'm sure your dentist is aware of this and will make every effort to avoid this nerve (lingual nerve) during future injections in this site.

Yes: Sometimes implants uncover themselves regardless of how deep you place them, but you are correct in calling it a one stage surgery. You may still need some minor refinement of the implant site at the time of the impression, but that's the restorative dentist's decision,
