Burning tongue: This reaction usually happens when the needle comes close to or rubs against the nerve to the tongue. While not common, the possibility exists with every injection in this area. I'm sure your dentist is aware of this and will make every effort to avoid this nerve (lingual nerve) during future injections in this site.

Not Likely: The reaction is from the direct placement of the needle or the Anesthetic into the nerve tissue itself. The burning tongue can be a causalgia form the trauma of the needle brushing or penetrating the nerve itself. A rare side effect but possible. If the nerve is altered then the sensation can be altered. These are usually short term issues and rarely last longer than 1 year.
