i've read diarrhea can be a side effect of antibiotic use, such as with clindamycin, but also that a more severe/dangerous form can sometimes occur. how do you know if what you have is normal antibiotic-related diarrhea or a more severe form?

Symptom severity : A few loose stools a day usually is no problem. Get concerned and contact the doc who prescribed the antibiotic if many watery stools, cramping, fever, or if you see blood in stools.

Yes: It is very common with clindamycin. Clindamycin is probably the antibiotic most associated with diarrhea. Your doctor may want to switch antibiotics if your diarrhea is bad.

after taking clindamycin(2weeks) and metronidazole(3day) for tooth infection they ruined my stomach( feel empty and sore but no cramp) and had diarrhea for 3days. after pepto, the stool is still soft side but i feel better. can this be c.diff?

: We rarely use metronidazole for tooth infection and it is probably used for c. diff colitis in your case. Yes, c. diff colitis can not be ruled out by your symptoms after 2 weeks of clindamycin. Take care.

Secondary infection: Antibiotics will often disturb the normal bacteria in your bowel and allow for the growth of other bacteria. Have a stool checked soon to see if this happened to you. All the best.

Folliculitis decalva: there are other treatment options regimen that don't include clindamycin, which may definitely cause diarrhea. See a dermatologist or infectious diseases specialist

Common: There is commonly an entity called antibiotic-induced diarrhea that occurs and is benign.  However, there is also a more serious condition call c. Diff colitis that can occur with certain antibiotics (like clindamycin) due to the killing of all of the bacteria in the colon except for that one particular one.

C. diff: Clindamycin is particularly famous for causing clostridium difficile colitis, and it's not recommended that you take anti-diarrhea medications if you have c. Diff. You should get tested for c. Diff before you try taking anything to control your diarrhea.

Monitor: Hi, its difficult to clinically make a call if the diarrhea is c diff related or not.
 Clindamycin on its own can cause diarrhea. The best course of action is to consult with the physician who prescribed it and see if you can swap it. If the diarrhea stops after the swap then you have the answer. If it continues then stool tests need to be done for c-diff or other causes. Keep urself hydrated.

my dr prescribed clindamycin oral 600mg/6h for 30 days to treat recurring boils, isnt this too much? i have diarrhea with 1 day on this med.

Maybe..: It does sound like a lot but I don't know the full scope of your case. I see that you have a history of skin abscesses which may be why your doctor put you on a long duration of antibiotics. If you are having diarrhea, talk to your doctor - he can probably switch to something else. Also I would take probiotics with it!! BE well!
