i have a stye and a chalazion on the same eye lid (1 inch apart) , should i go ahead treat the stye with warm compresses while it's still just a stye?

Accepted Answer

Stye can be painful : Hot compress will help both conditions. However a stye is painful since it is an infection in the root of the eyelash follicle  removing the eyelash should relieve the pain and hot compress will resolve the swelling along with some topical antibiotic.  Chalazion not painful also  needs hot compress and if not resolved will need to be dealt with by your Ophthalmologist.

is it safe to pop a chalazion on the top of my eye lid?

Accepted Answer

No: Don't try to pop it.  Rather, you should use warm/hot compresses several times a day and it will drain on its own.

what's the worst that can happen if the eye chalazion is not removed?  can it go away on its own?

Accepted Answer

If you do warm: compresses long enough, often enough when it's not enlarged to a point of needing surgical drainage, you can reverse it. Overall, it means you have a long standing problem with eye dryness, not blinking enough, blepharitis, and need to see your eye doctor regularly to get this under control better. So, it's best to work with your eye doctor on this to remedy together.

Incise and drain : Chalazions can take months to resolve and consistent warm compresses and antibiotics like Azasite can many times resolve them. However in some cases the granuloma that forms around the lipid core requires surgical drainage.

Accepted Answer

24 hours: The patch can be removed in 24 hours or less.  I typically do not patch after the chalazion removal.

do styes & chalazions occur near the upper/lower eyelids or can they occur in the eye creases too?

Accepted Answer

: They are due to a blockage of the glands underlying each eyelash.  The swelling from them can occur anywhere from the lid margin to inside the lid.  They will not originate in an eye crease but can cause swelling underneath an eye crease.

after chalazion surgery, will the eye go back to the way it was, or will there be a permanent scar left behind?

Usually no scar: Usually no scar after chalazion surgery but the final result can sometimes take a few months to heal.  Sometimes the healing process can take even longer depending on the severity of the lesion and if it was drained from the anterior( skin side) or posterior ( conjunctival side).

i have a swollen lower eyelid. it's slightly puffy red, itchy. hurts to blink. no pink eye, no discharge. i'm thinking it's a chalazion. how long should i do home remedies before i go to the eye doctor to get assest?

: Yes, it could be chalazion or stye. Chalazion is usually on the upper lid. Yes, you just do the home remedies and if symptoms are not subsided within 5-7 days then you should see an ophthalmologist who will drain the cyst with local anesthetic. Remember if the inflammation comes down by itself, the cyst may be still there without symptom. Good luck.

Warm compresses: Apply warm compreses to the eyelid 3-4 times per day.  If this does not work in a week, see an ophthalmologist.

Warm compresses: Use several times a day for a few minutes each time. If not gone by two or three weeks or if it get worse, see an ophthalmologist.
