my doc says cos i'm allergic to ondansetron that i'm also allergic to antihistamines, what can i use for gritty itchy eyes due to spring allergies?

Huh?: Ondansetron allergy is very uncommon.  I am no allergist, but there is no apparent overlap between the antihistamine H1 and H2 receptor and the antiemetic HT3 receptor that I am aware of.  In addition, antihistamines have been used as part of the treatment of ondansteron allergy. I suggest you clear this up with your doc.

Combo effects : These two drugs when taken together can affect the electrical portion of the heart. I can cause a potentially dangerous arrhythmia. You may need an EKG to monitor the effects on the heart.

is it true ondansetron causes drowsyness.  what is the side effects?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Drowsiness is reported with this medication. The most common side effects are transient headache and dizziness. Constipation and diarrhea are also reported. Some patients experience anxiety. All of these side effects are reported with almost any medication.

Risk = QT: One resource (Epocrates) says there are no interactions, another (LexiComp) says they must not be taken together.

Both ondansetron (for nausea/vomiting) and fluoxetine (for mood) slow the electrical system of the heart in the same way.Under certain conditions in some people, the combo could lead to dangerous heart rhythms.If questions, good idea to mention this to your doc and ask his/her advice.

BACK TO NORMAL: Ondansetron (Zofran) primarily blocks potassium channels, prolonging the QT interval, but these changes are acute, transient and reversible. Concern was for IV formulation in doses higher than 16 mg.

Zofran (ondansetron) for nausea: If you stop a medicine for nausea, most likely you will experience a rebound effect after stopping the medication. Zofran (ondansetron) does not produce tolerance, therefore there will be not discontinuation syndrome or physical withdrawal if not taken anymore. Hopefully the cause for the nausea has disappeared and stopping zofran (ondansetron) will not cause any problems.

No Biggy: Why not just take care of the acid reflux?There are  many medications for it,and dietary modification, even Tums. Yes,Zofran (ondansetron) (ondansetron) helps nausea but it will make you drowsy (maybe that's what you need?),and yes, you could take a Zofran (ondansetron) if the acid reflux makes you nauseated.No biggy. But it's always better to attack the cause-that will then take care of the symptoms.And if not you'll need to see your doc

took zofran (ondansetron) and had temp blurred vision but it went away. what usually causes the blurred vision, and if it went away and i stop meds, should i worry?

Possible drug effect: While blurred vision is not a listed side effect of Zofran (ondansetron), (ondansetron) uncommon side-effects can occur with any medicine.  The fact that the blurred vision went away when you stopped the drug suggests that the drug caused it.  The only way to prove that would be to restart Zofran (ondansetron) and see if it recurs.  The best recommendation is to avoid Zofran (ondansetron) altogether.

what're the effects of long term zofran (ondansetron) use for treating chronic nausea caused by anxiety? been taking abt 3, 4mg pills per week for 1.5 years already

For one thing...: It doesn't treat the anxiety, just covers one of the symptoms. Consider cutting the problem off at the source: get some good therapy for the anxiety. Then you won't need the zofran (ondansetron).
