PAIN mostly: Untreated caries will progress. Left unchecked the caries will hit the nerve of the tooth.........Next stop root canal. If the caries goes deep under the gum line the tooth may not be restorable.....Next stop extraction. So, the bottom line is get regular exams and have any caries treated. Litlle cavities grow up to be big cavities!

Poor oral hygiene and poor diet are directly contributory so if the retainer is, say, not removed for thorough home care it can certainly contribute to poor oral hygiene which may then lead to caries. We most commonly see this in infants whose parents put them to bed with a bottle of milk (nursing bottle caries). Milk is great however you still need to brush, floss and please do not put your children to bed with a bottle of milk.
