Stick with it: Don't frustrate yourself too much is the key. You want to stick to reasonable bed times and wake times and stick with that on the weekends. Don't lay in bed tossing and turning. Engage in light exercise, eat a healthy diet, and manage stress. If you have a sleep issue that persists, than ask your doctor to consider other sleep disorders.

Pillows: Pillows can come in handy when trying to sleep on your back. Try putting one behind your knees. You can then put more pillows on either side of you or under both arms. There is no one great technique to sleeping on your back. You have to find what works for you and just be persistent. It may take some time to get used to sleeping on your back.

2. Make a regular, relaxing bedtime routine. Relaxing rituals prior to bedtime many include a warm bath or shower, aroma therapy, reading, or listening to gentle music. 
3. Sleep in a dark, quiet, cool room on comfortable mattress & pillows.

Preferred that way: In the 1990's international &amp; local review of infant sleep practices found sleeping on their back to be the safest position. In countries/cultures that belly sleep infants a decline in sudden infant death by 40% was noted within years of the change to back sleeping. Babies can turn their head to spit up. That issue is a myth.

Inflammation?: Back problems causing pain at night are frequently associated with spine or sacroiliitis. You are not having radicular pain suggesting a disc.  Check with a rheumatologist!
