Preferred that way: In the 1990's international & local review of infant sleep practices found sleeping on their back to be the safest position. In countries/cultures that belly sleep infants a decline in sudden infant death by 40% was noted within years of the change to back sleeping. Babies can turn their head to spit up. That issue is a myth.

Back to sleep: The standard recommendation is that infants should sleep on their backs to avoid risk of apnea and compromise of the airway.
