Proper work  up: Carcinoids are low grade neuroendocrine tumors found in the GI tract and other areas related to the GI environment including pancreas, GB etc.  A PET/CAT scan would reveal potential sites of origin or spread if present.  In the liver, the hormones secreted produce the carcinoid syndrome.  If latter present work up essential. If asymptomatic one should see a gastroenterologist for possible work up.

Surgery: Find out from your physician whether you have carcinoid on board now and if so whether this is the cause of your flushing. If so, it is possible that your tumor can be debulked surgically even if it may not be curable. There may be pharmacologic options as well.

Carcinoid syndrome: Carcinoid syndrome is cluster of symptoms that can include-chronic flushing and/or diarrhea/wheezings which is the result of secretion of serotonin and other vasoactive substances into the systemic circulation. The carcinoid syndrome is primarily associated with metastatic carcinoid tumors usually from the midgut - to the liver. Carcinoid is a type of cancer- neuroendocrine tumor.

An octreotide scan (a nuclear medicine imaging technology) may help if conventional cross sectional imaging fails to locate it. Surgery is preferred, if the tumor is located and amenable to surgery. Somatostatin analogs (SSAs, like octreotide, lanreotide, pasireotide) can help

Your doc was probably trying to tell you that it is not what people assume when they think of cancer. Internet is not the right place for medical decisions or disease understanding. Your doc is. So trust her if not try another one. But not the Internet

i left florida for a week to nyc to a prominent cancer facility. was given a referral for a ct with contrast for carcinoid tumor. this is not cancer but behaves like it. do i show referral to my pcp or make my first contact with a medical oncologist?

: I think this depends on your insurance. If you need a referral from your PCP in order for your insurance to pay for the CT scan, then get the referral. I’m sure your PCP won’t mind giving you this referral. Call your insurance company to find out if a referral from your PCP is needed or not. Better to find out than end up with a bill. Good luck!
