No need to wait.: The change has been likely done because Xanax (alprazolam) 1mg qD  wasn't covering your daily anxiety symptoms, .Is that right? My concern is that  lorazepam 5mg po BID is quite much more than what you were taking.
A better transition is starting with lorazepam 1mg po TID..

If you've left out a decimal point and mean .5mg instead, this could be safe if your doctor prescribed it that way.  Please review with your physician.

Great Question : The truth is that you CAN take two at a time. The real question is SHOULD you? Ativan (lorazepam) is a short-acting anti-anxiety medication that is very effective. When the effect wears off, patients are inclined to take more. This sets the stage for over-use, misuse and possibly abuse. Talk to your doctor before altering your medication dose or schedule.  There are many options to managing your symptoms.
