Cautiously: All ssri can potentially effect platelet function. Mirtazepine may be an alternative which could potentially effect other blood cells, but platelet count or function not specifically mentioned in my sources. Discuss with your doctor for other possibilities.

i have a family hisotory of itp how would i take my child to get check out with out being accused of child abuse ?

ITP: I assume from your concerns your child has multiple petechial areas. Any reasonable physician with your family history can do a simple blood test to establish diagnosis. Itp is potentially a life threatening disease.  Please do not delay getting your child evaluated.

Infusion reaction: Rituxam infusion can cause reaction but a lot of people tolerate it well. Solumedrol should help with management of some symptoms if they do occur.

ITP: This is a bleeding disorder due to a low platelet count which can be secondary to other medical conditions or drug-induced. There is generally no dietary restriction for ITP patients but you may want to confirm with your doctor

fish oil helps lower cholesterol but i read that its not good for itp patients like me. what supplement can i take to lower my cholesterol?

Possible: Red yeast rice contains statin similar to what you may find in many cholesterol lowering drugs but the dose is uneven. Getting to close to normal weight may help. Unfortunately aside from drugs, there is no truly highly effective supplement.

adult patients with itp coexist with elevated antiphospholipid antibodies that have splenectomy,do they need to take heparin or warfarin for life time?

Generally : May need anticoagulant.  They also may need to be maintained on higher platelet to minimize the adverse effects of anticoagulants.  This has to be discussed with the treating hematologist

Itp: You are having low platelet count due to itp. Immuno-suppression with Prednisone and/ I.V.I.G, is the standard treatment.  Despite the treatment if you still have low platelet count along with some bleeding, then final option will be to go for spleenectomy.  Please call your hematologist to discuss the treatment options.  Good luck !

ITP: It depends on how low the count is and how well the person responds. That is why we have health care professionals to work with us. It reduces the guess work.

i have itp - never needed treatment. i'm on prozac for anxiety. what can i take that is safe if i have a headache? tylenol (acetaminophen)? aleve?

Accepted Answer

Acetaminophen: Acetaminophen (Tylenol (acetaminophen) and many other over the counter meds) is safe because unlike Aleve (ibuprofen) it has no effect on platelet function. Aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) do affect platelet function, which increases risk of bleeding, which is already increased in ITP due a lower platelet count.
