what does it mean if you have strep throat, and red, swollen gums too?

Throat and gums: Strep throat is only one kind of pharyngitis. Most are viral. Have you seen a doctor and gotten a diagnosis? If not, you should. A simple test will show whether or not it's true strep. Red, swollen gums may or may not be related, but are most often due to inflammation, i.e., gingivitis, common with poor oral hygiene. You should see a physician about your throat and a dentist about your gums.

my gums have become quite swollen due to strep throat and it seems like i have tiny canker sores on my gums. should i be worried? how can i treat it?

Strep throat: Strep does not cause open sores in the gums or back of the throat. You may either have an additional problem with viral infection or u could have two problems. Either way if the sores bother you see your doctor. You may benefit ether from an antiviral drug like Acyclovir or your doc may use a topical drug like silver nitrate to treat the sores.

Accepted Answer

URI: Upper respiratory tract infections, whether due to viruses or bacteria, may trigger migraine headaches in a susceptible person.  Swollen gums, if due to gingivitis, will probably need treatment with antibiotics, but to determine this accurately will require a visit to your doctor and a good examination.

28 year old female with swollen gums and sore throat with while patches, pain radiating to the ears.tried cefobid, metronidazole but symptoms increase?

Accepted Answer

Antibiotics: Antibiotics have been ineffective, indicating that your infection may not be bacterial.  Or perhaps it's the wrong antibiotic.  Call your Dentist and your Physician for appointments.  Ask them to consult with each other.

i have a similar problem. my tongue seems swollen, blisters on the sides of the tongue only.  a bit swollen gums. and sore throat. m deficient in b12?

Sounds like: a VIRAL infection which is also called"foot and mouth Disease...common in summer months ..this does NOT sound like a Vitamin deficiency!

Couple of possibles: If the gum tissue between the teeth is flattening out or eroding instead of pointed, then this sounds like ANUG. Usually presents with aches and sluggishness and often a fever. Commonly with very stressful times and poor nutrition and sleep. Might also be primary herpetic gingivostomatitis. See your Dentist ASAP for Dx and TX. Or, go to Minute Clinic, etc. Meantime- high fluids, ibuprofen, sleep.

Doctor can check: New throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants. Usually, a person sees the doctor if the sore throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep throat). Throat lozenges and Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Motrin can help decrease throat pain.

my 7 year daughter has had intermittent fever (up to 102for 5 days  now along with a little sore throat and red swollen gums- she is getting a mohler tooth at ths time also. any suggestions for treatment?

Probably viral: If she also has a stuffy nose, this is likely viral.  If she only has a sore throat, i would recommend having your doctor take a look and swab her throat for a quick strep test.  Make sure she's drinking fluids, and use tylenol (acetaminophen) or Ibuprofen as recommended on the bottle for her weight.

Many possibilities: Take her to a primary care provider for an evaluation. The answer to your question depends on examination and may involve some lab tests.

i got a sore throat from my mom being sick and then shortly afterwards, i went to the dentist for the second filling in this month. i then have had swollen gums and a sore tongue, as if i have bitten it multiple times.

Sore throat: Unfair to both you and the dentist to subject him/her to your throat infection.  Next time consider rescheduling elective procedures until you feel better.  Swollen gums and sore tongue are not due to whatever caused your sore throat, and need to be investigated.  See your Physician or Dentist for evaluation.
