Rifaximin and CDI: Rifaximin is used as an alternative therapy to treat clostridium difficile infection when other treatments fail.  There have been case reports of resistance of c. Difficile to Rifaximin but these are rare.  In short should not cause you to get cdi.

Maybe temporary fix: If you have ibs due to sibo (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth)--antibiotics like xifaxan (rifaximin) may help. Sibo may also occur from anatomic variations in the small bowel, altered small bowel motility, or a variety of systemic conditions that prevent permanent cure (e.g. The bacteria just grow back). Xifaxan (rifaximin) is also curative for c.Difficile in appropriate dose ; settings.

What's going on?: Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth? A real diagnosis, or a pop self-diagnosis for your self-described tiredness? If the latter, i'd urge you to maintain a healthy skepticism but your experiment is basically safe. If you're going to do this, at least be alert to the warning of pseuomembranous colitis and get treated by an evidence-based practitioner if it happens.

No: While it is potentially possible for all antibiotics to cause C. diff, it has not shown to be a significant cause in early studies. As this medication is used more extensively in IBS and SIBO we could see C. diff infections, but this should be rare. No need to take Acidophilus during therapy.

Low risk for C. Diff: Rifaximin is a semisynthetic antibiotic based on rifamycin, which has a broad spectrum.  After initial decrease in the GI flora (enterococcus, escherichia coli, lactobacillus, bacteroides and clostridium perfringens), normalization is seen after 1 month. In one study of 211 patients given Rifaximin chronically for 8 months, no patient tested positive for c. Difficle, but the possibility exists.

No: These drugs are used for liver failure. Liver failure, can cause smelling stools, especially with high ammonia levels.

Gastroenteritis: Your diarrhea maybe viral in origin and xifaxan (rifaximin) only works in bacterial infection usually caused by e colistay on a bland diet and try using probiotics.
