i have slow colonic transient. i've been on miralax w/prune juice as prescribed for a year. it causes loose stools. my doctor prefers that. is it safe?

Yes: it is safe, however if you are not having an appropriate response, different treatment options exist (including prescribed medications such as Amitiza, Linzess). You should re-discuss with your doctor.

Constipation care: The best way to manage constipation is with a daily regimen that keeps you regular. For many reasons it is not good to wait until you are very constipated, then take something to treat it. The best medication to use, which is safe to use every day, is glycolax. Use glycolax daily, consume plenty of fiber and drink lots of water. Avoid suppositoty use unless you are severely constipated.

Prune juice: We don't want prune juice to give the runs.  That is unhealthy.  Just want it to help w/bowel movements.  Everyone is different.  Start w/one glass and increase until effective.  Use unsweetened prune juice because the sugar or artificial sweeteners in juices is not healthy for anyone.  Peace and good health.  If you have GI symptoms please see your doctor.

There should be: a "happy medium" between obstruction and diarrhea..Perhaps you should decrease the amount of Prune juice (which is the "variable" "dosae:) until you have soft stools with 'reasonable" frequency!

Osmotic laxative : Prune naturally contains sorbitol which has  a mild laxative action. Prunes also contain large amounts of phenolic compounds (e.g. Neochlorogenic and chlorogenic acids), which are also though to have laxative properties. Once the cause of your constipation is diagnosed, a non-osmotic laxative may work better for you. Or simply eat a prune or two.

Depends on situation: If you consume enough this can trigger diarrhea. There are enough poorly absorbed sugars in this that can act as an osmotic agent and trigger loose stools.  I routinely recommend it for babies with constipation.

Diarrhea: Prune juice on its own does not cause the problem. Prune juice is taken to make stool looser and if there is diarrhea, yes that can cause electrolyte imbalance.

Constipation : Prune  juise actually is good for constipation,  try to stay regular by eating high fiber diet, plenty of fluids,  cut down on apple, bananas,  tea. About the loose stool you got , it happened  because  part of the stools become fermented &amp; loose &amp; it usually comes out after hard stool. So stay regular  &amp;  be well . Good luck.

May or may not: Bad breath (halitosis) is usually a multifactorial occurrence.  The most plausible cause is the luffy epithelial layer of the tongue, which can collect and hide millions of bacterias and chemicals, hence  the bad taste or odor.  Many foods and drinks can exacerbate such process. Other factors are accumulation of plaque &  tartar build up between the teeth & restorations, cavities, & sinus drainage.
