Hormonal: There are different types of weight gain. The one you described is mostly related to the fact you are a woman(estrogen related ) and possibly some genetic influences as well.There are some  forms of weight gain that are worse, like the one caused by excess steroids named cushing syndrome.

You should see your doctor to look into the cause of your swelling and find out why only one of your legs swell.

Regular exercises should improve stability but make sure there is balance in exercising all the muscles.
