This most commonly is due to insufficiency of the valves of the veins in that leg. The swelling would go down overnight. Do you have a family history of varicose veins? A blood clot in a vein can also cause edema of the leg. In view of this, I recommend consulting a vascular surgeon for evaluation & advice. Appropriate testing.of the leg veins will be ordered. Compression stockings are helpful.
