: This is from the Center for Disease Control website from the USA: "Rabies virus is transmitted through direct contact (such as through broken skin or mucous membranes in the eyes, nose, or mouth) with saliva or brain/nervous system tissue from an infected animal."

my 2 year old got minor bit from wild cat. what are the chances of infection and rabies? i washed bit and animal control watching cat for 10 days.

Continue to monitor: Although rabies is relatively rare- it still occurs in the animal population in the us. In sonoma county ca where i live, we had rabies in a cat recently.  It is prudent that animal control is watching the cat (also likely testing the cat). Continue to watch the bit. If you see increased redness, streaks or pus, have your child seen by the doctor.

i received pre exposure vaccine schedule last month? exposure again i received 4 shots? if again exposure how many days i safe from rabies infection?

Relax: Once you complete the vaccine series you have ongoing protection for at least 2 years. Those in high risk occupations are encouraged to get boosters after 2 years or have a blood test to see if they still have a protective antibody level.

i have a cat that was born in my backyard & lives out there.he playfully bit my arm.not a puncture, more of a scrape from his tooth with a tiny bit of blood.washed it immediately&used antibiotic ointment.should i be concerned with infection or rabies?

: You did the right thing to possible avoid cat scratch disease. If you develop swollen lymph nodes than you contracted this disease, but most unlikely. Cats don't carry the rabies disease.

i had a facet joint shot for low back pain on feb 8th which consists of steroid. would that have suppressed the antibodies i had from earlier rabies vaccines and make me less protected? would my immune systems response to newer infections be slower?

: A  focal "steroid" injection for facet problems will not suppress the immune system, nor alter T or B memory cells.  You will neither be more or less resistant to "newer infections".  The adaptive immune system, antibodies, plasma cells, etc., will be unaffected by your injection.   But if you are worried, discuss your concerns with your doctor.

: Local injection of steroids does not cause significant side effects of taking oral or IV steroids. It is not likely to lower the immune system

Yes, but won't help: Rabies is a fatal disease, and rabies shots are needed after exposure to rabies, to prevent the virus from getting to one's brain. Taking antioxidants will not affect the final outcome.

Fever aches malaise: The first signs of rabies in a person is flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, and malaise (feeling general discomfort). Unless a person knows he was exposed to rabies, he probably would not suspect his flu-like symptoms were from rabies. Since his symptoms have begun, his rabies infection is presumed to be fatal, but he should still try to get medical care.

Don't wait: If suspected at all, get to an er asap for treatment.  Rabies is historically almost always fatal!

i accidentally ate a small piece of raw pork kidney!is rabies infection possible?

Accepted Answer

Eating raw pork: I am assuming this was a commercially butchered animal  -and if home butchered   - the animal was "normal" prior.   With that caveat -  it would be extremely unlikely that you would develop rabies.   At the most you might get an upset stomach.   Raw pork does carry the risk of trichinosis but good farming techniques have generally eliminated this .    I don't think you have much to worry about.
