Continue to monitor: Although rabies is relatively rare- it still occurs in the animal population in the us. In sonoma county ca where i live, we had rabies in a cat recently. It is prudent that animal control is watching the cat (also likely testing the cat). Continue to watch the bit. If you see increased redness, streaks or pus, have your child seen by the doctor.

Cat Bite: Cat bites are punctured wounds, infection rate is 50%, majority wound infections are polymicrobial, at least half caused by species p. Multocida. There is general concensus that antibiotics should be administered to all but the most trivial cat bite injuries, regardless of whether there is evidence of infection. Vigorus irrigation of wound needed; amox-clav is the antibiotic of choice.
