CROUP: It is not a good idea to go swimming when he is sick with croup. It will aggravate his cough and breathing problem.

Cold symptoms: I think it is alright to resume normal activities when your toddler is back to acting normally.  A little residual cough in that setting is not a big deal.

Accepted Answer

Croup?: Increased humidity is good for croup.  Run a humidifier in the child's room or sit in the bathroom with the hot shower on to steam up the room.  Even taking a car ride with the windows cracked over can help with the stridor of croup.

what should i do if my toddler keeps getting the croup over and over again? she has had croup for about 3,4 times!does it mean she might have asthma?

Yes: Recurrent croup is likely from asthma but this needs to be evaluated by your pediatrician and/or an allergist.  This condition however may subside by age 3 or 4 in a high proportion of children .Due to  the small caliber of the airways in young children, making a diagnosis of asthma may be difficult. If the child has eczema and found to be allergic + pos family history, then asthma is more likely.

22 months toddler had fever, croup and runny nose. fever stopped and symptoms got better but didn't go away for about 2 weeks. today the fever is back and cough and runny nose is as bad as it was in the beginning. what meds can we use?

Depends on the child: A gap of 2 weeks between symptoms suggests the two illnesses are different, not just one long one. Fever with symptoms of upper respiratory infection in a fully immunized 22 month infant are more suggestive of a viral infection. Fever can be controlled with paracetamol as needed, moist air and honey can be used to control cough. It's extremely important to hydrate. Avoid cough suppressant.

Sounds like croup: Croup is a barking (croupy) cough that is often worse at night (not all the time, necessarily). Mild croup is a viral illness that lasts for 4-7 days and is typically more distressing than serious. Look for signs that your kiddo is having trouble breathing as that means you may need to get them to the er right away.

Probably: If the kid is otherwise well i see no reason to exclude them from swimming. Were s/he to be running fever or other worrisome symptoms i would avoid the activity.

See below: Croup will probably go away within a week without any problems. If he has a severe case of croup, you will know by labored breathing at rest. Rx: take your him into a steamy bathroom for 15 -20 min or out into the cold night air. Holding him upright will help him breathe more easily. Salt water drops/spray for nostrils every 4-6 hrs can help.

Croup: Cold night air can be soothing in cases of croup. Bundle the child up so they don't get cold but let them breath in the cooler air. It may or may not help but it's always worth a try.

Breathing difficulty: Croup is an inflammation of the main airway, and most of the time, it is caused by a virus.  Albuterol will not treat the inflammation.  A child needs to be seen by a doctor when he/she has difficulty breathing, rapid breathing, retractions between the ribs, a high-pitched or squeaking noise when inhaling, drooling or difficulty swallowing, or looks very sick. Meds to reduce inflammation is needed
