Visual : Visual recovery is usually rapid after cataract surgery.  My patients are often able to return to work one or two days after their surgery, depending on the occupation.  Normally only one eye is operated on at time, which will leave your vision unchanged in the eye that is not having surgery .  Your eye surgeon will be glad to advise you about returning to work.  The improvement in vision from cataract surgery should make it all seem worthwhile.

Yes: Yes.  It is fine.

Accepted Answer

Depends: If the surgery is early in the morning, it does not matter.  If laterin the day, the pills may induce low blood sugars since you are not allowed to eat.  At our surgicenter, we tell our patients not to take their diabetic pills until after surgery on that day.

i take ashwaghanda every day i am having cataract surgery in two weeks is it safe to continue taking ashwaghanda even up to day of cataract surgery?

Accepted Answer

Stop it to be safe: There are concerns in the literature that ashwaghanda may slow or depress activity in the central nervous system (CNS)j.  This is why it may help with stress and anxiety.  But because of these concerns, it is recommended that you stop taking this herbal product two weeks before having surgery.  Check with your eye surgeon for his/her recommendation to be sure. Depends: If depends on the surgical and anesthetic methods used, whether your eye has any pre-existing conditions, and whether there were any complications. You should ask you cataract surgeon for your specific situation.

Yes: If you are taking multivitamins or similar, you can certainly stay on them if you are going to have cataract surgery.

Healing time: You should see improvement in 1-2 days and stability/best vision in 1-2 weeks.  I wait until 1 month postop to check if the patient needs any glasses since the prescription can fluctuate early on.

Depends: Sometimes the recovery is very fast, or it can take a long time if there are complications.  Some people see perfectly the next day.  It's dependent on several factors such as how much energy is used to break up the lens, how fast the surgery was completed, how healthy the eye and cornea is, etc.  Usually postoperative drops are used for about 1 month.

Cataract : Cataract surgery should rapidly restore your vision.  It may be possible to see well without eyeglasses, if you are a good candidate for a multifocal lens implant.  Your eye surgeon (ophthalmologist) will be to further advise you.

Yes: In most instances, it is not necessary to stop Aspirin or Plavix (clopidogrel) for routine cataract surgery. Best to consult directly with your surgeon about this.
