: You don't mention for what condition you're taking plavix. If you have a coronary artery stent in place you shouldn't discontinue plavix  at all. If you're taking it for a prior stroke or a recurrent TIA, I still don't recommend going off it for a tatoo.

Avoid tattoo : Having stents placed, you will have a higher risk of complication due to potential infection caused by tattooing.  Given that, i would avoid tattooing.

Yes: Tattoos can become infected and can also transmit hepatitis c occasionally. Also Aspirin and Plavix (clopidogrel) are potent blood thinners and would increase the risk of bleeding and bruising during the procedure. It would be prudent to avoid it. Also, many people change their minds about tattoos years later and require expensive laser treatments to remove them.

Don't stop plavix!: First, check with your doctor who prescribes the plavix (clopidogrel) for you. If it is being taken for a heart stent that was placed less than a year ago, you CANNOT stop the plavix (clopidogrel) for any reason. Also, be very cautious about using ANY other supplements along with your prescription medicines, especially other blood thinners. Be sure your doctor knows exactly what you are taking, including supplements.

Would not: Since there will be excessive bleeding during the process it will make it very difficult for the tattoo artist.

Tattoo: Getting a tattoo is always an infection risk. If there's bleeding, it will be considerably worse when taking anticoagulants. Not a good idea.

Yes, bad idea: Yes you bruise much more easily, and if you have head trauma, you could bleed into your brain, don't do it!

Double question: The active metabolite has an elimination half-life of about eight hours. Following an oral dose of 14c-labeled clopidogrel in humans, approximately 50% was excreted in the urine and approximately 46% in the feces in the five days after dosing. Because Plavix works by irreversibly inhibiting a receptor on platelet cell membranes, the effect of the drug will linger even though the drug is gone.

hi doctors! i take plavix 75mg daily. i get occasional purple bruising of unknown origin...at least unknown to me! how do you/how does one know if the purple bruising is a reaction that "the plavix is working," or that something is or may be wrong?

Not unexpected: Plavix is a longterm valuable anti-platelet agent to prevent heart attacks and strokes.  Since bleeding time is prolonged, not unusual for occasional and scattered bruising.  This is common and typically self-limited.  You could discuss this with your doctor if you choose.
