Eye doctor: Different states have different laws. Check with your city's board if health as to your eye doctors claim. Ideally it doesn't hurt to get your eyes dilated so that the doctor can check your retina to rule out things like diabetes or high blood pressure.

i am going to eye doctor to get glasses, what to expect?

You can expect: to have your vision and eye pressure checked. Also, you should expect to have your pupils dilated so they can evaluate the health of your retina and optic nerve. The dilation lasts for several hours afterwards. Some special pictures might be taken as well. Bring your current glasses with you if any, and previous eye exam records if there were any issues. No: If you need glasses and continue to strain your eyes without them you may develop headaches or some other symptoms related to straining your eyes and your eyes will continue to worsen but going without glasses is not risky in general except when you are driving.

Maybe: If you are farsighted, an otc reading glass may clear your distance vision .  This is rare, however, sine=ce very few people meet the appropriate criteria.  A custom distance prescription would be the best.

Presbyopia: Is the term which describes the typical age-related development of reading problems.  Often, patients who don't need glasses for distance vision can get along with otc readers.  This type of glasses is meant to be used only for reading and you won't be able to see distance well through them.  Alternatives include half-sized lenses in which you look over the top, or bifocals to wear all the time.

Need more info: However, if you were examined by a reputable ophthalmologist, not an optometrist, i would update your glasses.

Astigmatisn: If you have a very small amount of astigmatism, you can wear soft contact lenses that do not have astigmatism correction and still see very well with them.

Visual acuity: Those of us in middle-age who develop need for glasses to assist in reading may have presbyopia, while hyperopia (far-sightedness) typically develops at earlier age (and also requires glasses for reading). Regardless, if you notice a film over your eyes w/o using glasses, it's time to return to your Optometrist or Ophthalmologist for further evaluation. Perhaps you're myopic (near-sighted) too?
