Maybe: If the two physicians practice together, then they can know.  Also, with electronic medical records, the information may be readily available.  However, it is always a good idea to let any health care provider know about current and past medications.

i have been on anxiety medication called paxil for almost a year. my gp prescribed it to me but i'm wondering if i should see a psychiatrist. the biggest issue is also affording it. what should be my next step? i still suffer quite a bit

Can try online: If cost is a big issue, and if a patient is already improved on a single anxiety drug, then she can try looking for a psychiatrist (MD) or psychologist (PhD) online, such as on HealthTap's Concierge premium service. Availability varies by location. Psychiatric drugs are usually not prescribed online, but counselling can be done online. Psychologists are not MD's and don't prescribe drugs anyway.

Get names of psychiatrists (geriatric psychmd if mom is 65+) from: her insurance company, her primary care doctor's office, friends/family, or local hospital er.  Call each psychiatris and ask if s/he is accepting new patients with mom's health insurance. Then call those mds to see if it seems like they will be a good "fit".

If your condition needs diagnosis and expert advice in selecting the proper medication, a psychiatrist would be your first choice. If your friend still resists that he/she may be simply looking for an excuse and may find another reason.  Our health and peace of mind is more important than stigma, which is quickly fading anyway.  Not all psychological conditions are helped by medication although some are.

The 1st visit will be an evaluation, where he or she will ask you questions about your depression and other emotions, and allow you to talk about anything upsetting you.  By the end of the session, the psychiatrist will usually be able to tell you what will help.  This may include antidepressant medicine, which he or she can prescribe.

Yes: Very often, psychiatrists have to resort to meds to help taking care of uncontrollable behaviors like constant screaming in severe cognitively impaired patients.
