how many extra calories does the atkins diet burn? i know that fat is burned instead of carbs on the atkins diet, but how does that change the amount of calories burned?

Less calories: The important thing about the atkins diet is that you eat very little carbohydrate.  As a result you eat more fat.  For most people, fat is more satisfying in terms of feeling full than carbs.  As a result you eat fewer calories overall and lose weight.  Also, when fat is burned it produces ketones.  These suppress your appetite as well.  The amount of calories burned depends on your activity.

how accurate is the calorie count on my elliptical machine?? if i'm working out for 30+ minutes and the calories burned says 100, can i rely on that? i understand i must burn more than i consume, but how can i calculate my burn at 5'5", 185 lbs??

Calorie calculate: Get the app Cronometer and enter what you eat and exercise you do and see. 100 calories is about 1/2 Snickers.  You need to exercise more or eat fewer calories.  Simple in concept difficult in execution.

i've had v low iron & hb (as low as 19 (1.9) for years- cause is mental illness. my ?= can this cause nerve damage to hands/feet? they burn, itch badly briefly & coldness eases it. heat, exercise & gravity seem to bring it on/worsen it?

: Odd statement. The blood forming system in your body does so no matter how your brain functions. If mental illness triggered poor dietary choices that starved the system of needed nutrients it may be a factor in anemia. The same lack of nutrients can lead to nerve damage. You need to discuss this all with your regular physician. Both issues can likely be fixed.

Absolutely: Yes, strength training does burn calories.  In some cases, very strenuous strength training can burn almost as many calories as aggressive cardiovascular exercise such as jogging/cycling etc.  It is generally a good idea to discuss your exercise program with your primary doctor and to consider a professional trainer to help to tailor your regimen to you. Determine how much daily caloric intake somebody with your height/weight requires. From there, you can figure out the type of workout needed to burn your desired calories. It's a fine line that needs to be regulated.

In less than Out: As long as your calories IN are less than your calories OUT you will lose weight (fat).  Any calorie that you take in that your body does not need (for exercise or to maintain the body) will be stored as fat.

Apps: There is actually a pretty cool app called myfitnesspal available for free on iOS and Android (methyltestosterone). I used this when I had to lose weight safely for a sport by a certain time period. It allows you to calculate in calories and nutrients in, and your exercises are searchable. It won't be exact, but it gives a good estimate and it does work well. It's free, you've got nothing to lose... but weight!

Strength training: I presume when you say “lose calories”you mean lose weight. Aerobic training is an efficient way to lose weight and burn fat. However, strength training results in larger muscles which burn fat and expend calories at a higher level than undeveloped muscle. Typically, a combined program of strength training and aerobic conditioning results in the weight loss you seek.
