No need for ca 125: No good screening test for ovarian cancer- not a blood test, not an ultrasound etc. Ca 125 is very non specific- it is not recommended to be done as a screening test.  Only useful for somebody who has ovarian cancer and known to have related increased of ca 125 - to monitor response of teatment and as a follow up. If you're worry about ovarian cancer-you need to see a gynecologist.

Not beneficial: The ca125 test is not used for screening for ovarian cancer because it does not work in the general female population. The ca125 can be abnormal in situations without any cancer and most importantly using this test does not save any lives like in the case of maamograms for breast cancer.

Possibly: Not usually but there are more accurate tests now , like the ova-1 and if I do a ca-125 i combine it with an he-4 blood test. If you are worried obviously you need to also have an ultrasound and possible further testing and your gyn can refer to to a gyn oncology surgeon- that type of doctor has additional training to deal with pre-cancer and cancer and to rule them in or out.

No: Ca 125 is a tumor marker  which is frequently associated with ovarian cancer.  The " Ca" refers to carbohydrate antigen which has little to do with cancer except when it is known that ovarian cancer is present.  At that time the test can be used,   for "monitoring" the response to treatment, but not  for making the diagnosis.  One of the frequent causes of an elevated Ca125 is alcoholic cirrhosis.

Yes: There are other cancers that will have a positive ca-125.  They include cancer of the pancreas, stomach, esophagus, liver, breast, colon, or lung.  Cancer of the lining of the abdominal cavity, and cancer of the fallopian tubes or lining of uterus.

No: It is not.  It is often used as such but: a hint of oca requires careful investigation, often surgery. Ca-125 gives many "false positives" so some surgeries would have been unnecessary . This would be ok with those who had oca, but perhaps not with those who did not.  Ca-125 also gives "false negatives".  This is worse, as the reassurance was misleading!  pelvic sonography is a better tool.
