will shots work for a c3-c4 herniated disc?

Accepted Answer

No. Tread lightly.: No. Disc will not heal with injections. What ore your symptoms?  Any weakness/numbness - see neurosurgeon. Pain only - nerve root block may indeed help. "shots" in the sense of epidural steroid injections are a (lucrative) "band-aid". Given the proximity to the spinal cord, injections into the cervical epidural space can cause paralysis. If pain is at all tolerable - tread lightly around "shots".

i have a cervical fusion at c3,4,5. i have a herniation at c5-6. how would the herniated disc be fixed? would it be connected to my current fusion?

Accepted Answer

Adjacent Fusion: If you have a herniated disc at a level near your current fusion the new disc can be treated with a fusion that would connect with the other fusion.  There are also new modern devices which allow us to do this without removing the plate from your previous surgery.

why would they do epidural between c7 & t1 when the herniated disc is between c3 &c4 & c4&c5?

Accepted Answer

Symptom dependent: The location of epidural blocks should correspond to the area of referred pain. It is certainly plausible that the treating physician did not feel that the C3 disc was the cause of your symptoms and in fact the area in C7 region was in fact more likely to be causing your pain.

what are the symptoms of upper cervical disc issues?  c1, c2, and c3?

Neck pain: Upper cervical disc issues will generally present with simply upper neck pain.  No associated radiating arm symptoms would be expected.  It would be possible, but unusual, to have significant spinal cord compression at these levels because the spinal canal is larger there.

muscle twitching all over, neck weakness/stiffness, minor disc herniation of c2/c3 that hasn't resolved in 8 months. prednisone helped but once im off prednisone symptoms get worse again. normal emg. should i test for lyme? what other thoughts?

The same: Slipped disc is a layman's term for a disc herniation. Most have no symptoms and are seen fairly frequently on imaging studies.  Symptoms can range from pain in the spine , in the extremities, numbness, tingling, weakness & bowel/bladder problems . If at a thoracic or cervical level maybe gait, balance or spasticity issues as well as dexterity problems. This is  known as a myleopathy.

Yes: A herniated disk is a term often used to describe MRI images and can be present without symptoms.  A herniated disk on MRI must be correlated to a patient's symptoms.  Symptomatic herniated disks most often present as shooting nerve pain down the arm or leg on the side of the herniation.

Typical spinal : Stenosis symptoms in the lumbar spine are pains radiating to the leg(s) with progressive standing and walking relieved by bending over or sitting while a disc herniation causes pain into the leg(s) worse with sitting and bending and usually better standing or walking.  Both feel better typically lying down.  Obviously, there are variables based on several factors in terms of symptom presentation.

Sciatica: If a disc herniation occurs in the low back and pushes on a nerve, it usually causes pain or numbness running into the buttock and down the leg.  If it occurs in the neck, it causes pain that runs into the arm.  Thank you for the question.

i possibly have herniated disc for a year. i have the symptoms but they are little and don't affect my day. if i do some exercises will herniated disc treated? and if i left untreated is dangerous?

Accepted Answer

: Herniated disc is common and it is usually self-limited with or without exercise. However, with appropriate back exercise you may prevent the recurrence.
