Fungus infection: Tinea pedis, or athlete's foot, is caused by a fungus (often by t. Rubrum fungus) that can be on locker room floors or other people's footwear. If the fungus is able to take hold on the skin cells and start growing, one will get the athlete's foot rash. Tinea pedis should be treated to relieve symptoms and also to prevent it from spreading to the toenails.

Fungus lives : In dark, wet, moist areas. Hence, if your carpet is dry, I don't think it lives there long. I can not give you any exact time as I simply do not know.

Which one?: It is called athletes foot because gym goers easily spread the fungus to each other by walking barefoot in showers and locker rooms, and because the fungus loves moist, dark environments. It's called tinea pedis medically because tinea is any non-invasive fungal infection that eats the keratin in our skin and pedis means "foot". Tinea corporis, or ring worm, is a similar infection onthebody.

Yes: There are topical creams that you can try for treating athletes foot.  They can be found at any pharmacy or drug store.  Common examples include Lamisil (terbinafine) or naftin.  If there is no resolution, i would recommend being seen by a podiatrist.

OTC creams: Tinea pedis or athlete's foot often involves the area between the toes. Anti fungal creams are effective for tines pedis whereas Hydrocortisone cream would typically be effective for eczema. Most cases of eczema need moisturizing while tines pedis areas need to be kept dry.

Yes: Keep the area dry, change your socks part way thru the day. Make sure you keep the area clean.  If not reaponding see a podiatrist.
