i had my appendix removed 9 days ago. my bruising continues to grow and is quite painful. now extending from hip to hip and still growing. normal?

Not normal.: it is not unusual to have some bruising after surgery, but it should not be increasing in size 9 days out from your surgery. Usually the pain would be decreasing by this time also. You should call your surgeon right away to be evaluated. Good luck.

i had an emergency appendectomy two days ago.  the procedure was done laparoscopically.  i just found a very large bruise on my penis....is this norm?

Sometimes see this: It is not uncommon to have some swelling and bruising below an incision following surgery.  It would depend on where your incisions are located.  Very common after hernia - usually resolves in about a week or two.  You should have a follow up with your surgeon by then.

i have just had my appendix removed. do i need to change my diet until the post-surgery pain improves? is 'gurgling' or trapped wind common post-op?

Very common, post op: Your diet post appendecomy should be soft and bland with slow advancement to a more normal diet. Post surgery 'gas' and 'gurgling' is normal. Surgical removal of the appendix causes the rest of the small/large bowel to act irregular and irritable. This should slowly regain a normal flow pattern. Avoid heavy foods with high bulk. Avoid gas forming foods. Add probiotics, yogurt.  Avoid constipation.

when i had my appendix removed was neg for appedicitis. it was hard, fibrous, and contained lesions. is this common? what causes this?

Normal appendix: A normal appendix can have some fibrous obliteration of the lumen described by the pathologist, that is a normal benign finding in a normal appendix.

can i smoke marijuana after getting my appendix removed? its been over 4 days since i got surgery.

Want to heal ??: Any smoking activity can delay the healing process while you recover from your surgery. It can trigger capillary spasm in the very sites you want working hard to repair those tissues. I would give it a couple weeks before resuming your plan.

my appendix can never be seen on a ct scan (have had a few scans over the last 10 years). this concerns me because ive never had my appendix removed. how would appendicitis be diagnosed if its not visible on a ct scan?

: Appendicitis , when it exists,  will commonly be consistent with findings on a CT scan which aid the physician in making the diagnosis of  appendicitis, secondary to inflammatory changes in the appendix and surrounding tissue, which along with the physical exam and attendant symptoms (nausea, localized  abdominal pain in the right lower quadrant) will point toward this diagnosis.

how long it take to fully recover from having appendix removed?

48 to 72 hrs.: Recovery depends on status of appendix and whether there was an associated abscess from performation or disease very localized.  After this was the procedure done by laparoscopy or by an open surgical procedure.   
If there was no abscess and a laparoscopic procedure performed the GI tract will return functionally in 48 hrs.

Appendectomy: Typically most people are recovered from an appendectomy surgery withing a couple of weeks.

Accepted Answer

: It is not a good idea to smoke cigarettes or marijuana while you are recovering from surgery as this could affect your healing ability. Smoking also adversely affects your health in general but especially puts you at risk for lung side effects like asthma, COPD (emphysema/chronic bronchitis), lung cancer, etc. These diseases can ultimately shorten your life expectancy.
