Ice: Placing an ice pack on the outside of the face will usually help.  Place it on the area for 15-20 minutes and then the other side, that way it is not contestant cool, but cool/warm.

Ice and Rest: Icepacks applied to the face immediately following surgery will help reduce the swelling.  On the days following surgery, moist heat packs applied to the face will help decrease the swelling and muscle soreness.  Eating fresh pineapple and papaya are foods that have been reported to help reduce bruising.

Accepted Answer

It can be: Bruising of the facial tissues and tightness of the jaws can be a common finding following the removal of impacted wisdom teeth.  The degree of bruising and jaw tightness may be dependent upon your complexion, any medications you are taking that can prolong bleeding, the position of your impacted teeth, and the surgical technique as well as experience of your dentist or surgeon.

if my wisdom teeth haven't broken through the gums will there be more bruising when they are removed then normal? (they are also impacted)

Possibly: But it really doesn't matter. You need them out, and after it's done, the pain meds will help you cope with any post operative discomfort. You will probably not have any extra-oral bruising, but rather intra-oral swelling. Each person reacts differently to the local procedure.

Yes: Bruising intraorally can be expected with wisdom tooth surgery.

No: Most people do have wisdom teeth, some people have two or three, but not all four and some people may not have any.  Some people can have extra sets of them!

Sure...it Could: Usually, it does not cause much bother though.  But, if you have severely impacted wisdom teeth that are completely unerupted, it will be a bit more difficult to ext them.  Most normally, the vast majority of my patients who have wisdom teeth taken out, complain of soreness, not pain, for 2-3 days at a level of about 1-3, on a scale of 0-10 with 10 being worst pain possible.

It can vary: Wisdom teeth are usually the last teeth to develop and their eruption or appearance in the mouth can vary.  Some people may see part of the wisdom tooth in the mouth as early as the age of 12, while others may never see their wisdom teeth due to the teeth being impacted. A visit with a dentist and adequate x-rays allowing visualization of both jaws will help determine if the wisdom teeth can erupt
