Breasreconstruction : Breast reconstruction can be done at the time of mastectomy or after if that is the patients choice. If a patient has heart or lung problems these have to be evaluated before hand by specialists. Other medical problems and medications are evaluated as well. There also a number of options like fat grafting, one stage implant recon and the diep flap.  We have many options to offer women for recon.

Several weeks: Ask your plastic surgeon.  It varies with the type of reconstruction - typically a little less for implants than for flap reconstruction.  Plastic surgeons will give you very detailed instructions regarding your activities, return to work, etc.

Many options: Many women are candidates for immediate reconstruction at the time of mastectomy.  Usually most of the skin, and often times the nipple can be preserved to give a better cosmetic result. Judgement important: Inflammatory breast ca, known distant mets, o2-dep, psychiatrically too unstable, sepsis, uncontrolled diabetes, tobacco use, renal dialysis, kwashiorkor, lack of patient motivation or tolerance of multiple dr visits, doing it for other than oneself, collagen vascular disease, any other severe, uncontrolled wound healing-impairment, can't tolerate anesthesia. Contraindications are mostly relative.

Rebuilding a breast: Breast reconstruction is the rebuilding of a breast, usually after surgery for breast cancer (mastectomy or lumpectomy). The patient's own tissue (from another part of the body) or a breast implant can be used. More than 1 surgery is usually needed to complete the reconstruction. The nipple and areola can also be reconstructed. Some patients also have surgery on the other breast for best symmetry.
