Depends: Breast reconstruction is most commonly performed after mastectomy or lumpectomy for breast cancer. For years, delayed reconstruction was the norm. That meant women underwent their mastectomy, recovered, and then came back months or years later for reconstruction. Today, we are seeing more and more immediate reconstructions, this is when women have their reconstruction at the initial operation.
