Breast cancer: Breast reconstruction can be performed at anytime. The timing of chemotherapy sometimes alters the timing of surgery. Once surgery has been set up by your breast surgeon and you have decided on the reconstruction technique than you can proceed.

Immediately: Research shows far greater satisfaction levels, and certainly greater amounts of reconstruction (if delayed far fewer actually get done) when done immediately after the cancer surgery (in the same surgery). What my colleague is saying is important though, as chemo needs to be started asap after surgery so some dra will advise against reconstruction immediately if it may delay chemo or radiation rx.

Whenever you want: That's really up to you. From a comfort standpoint, recovery after surgery is probably easier if you avoid the hottest part of the year. Insurance issues may also come into play - its best for you financially if you can have all your treatment performed under one deductible if possible.
