Better not: US determination of baby's gender is at times subjective and depends on many factors: resolution, gestational age, technique, etc. so kindly ask your doctor for another exam, or simply wait and repeat later when the baby grows more, wishing you a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby

Why so tensed?: There is no reliable home method to determine the sex of your baby. While it is common these days to determine gender via ultrasound, my wife & i chose not to do this with our children- we waited til birth to find out. Why are you so tensed? How would learning if your baby is a boy or girl reduce your tension? If it is important then get an ultrasound, but this is not reliable until 18 weeks.

Easier to spot...: During ultrasound scanning, it is easier to spot a male fetus from a female fetus; hence the perception. It is also dependent on the experience of the technologist, the quality of the ultrasound machine, and the patients' body habitus.

Should be 100%: After 18 weeks gestation, most sonographers can determine the gender of a fetus via abdominal ultrasound with near 100% accuracy.  When it is not sure by 18 weeks, a repeat scan around 28 weeks will virtually always be definitive.

Myth: Around 16-20 wks you can sometimes identify the genitals. The placenta thing is a myth.

Can be difficult: I would not pick out gender specific clothes or decorations for the nursery.  Sometimes it is very easy to see the "important bits", and other times, usually related to the position of the fetus, it can be very hard.

Hard to tell: The ultrasound is relatively reliable after 18-20 weeks when read by an experienced radiologist. In simple terms  "the turtle must stick his head out" to see boy parts, and if they took enough time to evaluate the area it would be evident. I never bet the farm on an ultrasound. Although they are pretty good today I have seen them be wrong .

Can't Tell: Bmp is not a valid predictor of gender.

how do you get your baby to cooperate during the sonogram? we need to find out whether it's healthy and whether it's a boy or a girl. any tips?

I : I wish there was a definitive answer for this. Some women find that if they eat a sugary snack about 15 minutes prior to the ultrasound the baby will be very active, therefore giving the technician greater odds of seeing the sex. . Also consider the times when your baby is most active and try to schedule the ultrasound around that time. Also consider changing your position during the ultrasound, often times when you move the baby will as well.

Of course: We all have stories of sonograms that were not correct.  Most of the time the sonographer is able to determine the sex of the baby, but be prepared.  Congratulations!
