my wife had a right colon resection a little over a week ago and when she has a bowel movement she has no sensation off the need. is this normal?

Possibly: It may take some time to recover to fully normal function after colon surgery.  Since this is very soon after the procedure, and the resection is not in the area where sensation is usually affected, it should normalize soon.  Make sure she follows up with her surgeon as directed.

A lot missing: From your story. Your surgeon knows all the details, call him/her now. It is unusual for discharge before bm, not sure if you have an peri-rectal abcess, or hemorrhoid. If you problem was rectal rather than colon, there may have been instrumentation from below, but right or transverse, not.  Need to know size, nodes, and further therapy. It's ok to ask and even demand answers.

Causes include constipation (slow transit of stool through the intestine), medications that slow the bowel, nerve disorders that slow the bowel, tumors blocking flow of the stool, etc... A patient can use laxatives to keep the rectum clear, awaiting his appointment.

If you are: Not passing any flatus or becoming distended or have crampy abdominal pain or nausea or vomiting, yes.  If not, you can wait this one out for a couple more days.  Get to your surgeon if you have any of the above.

More than that can cause excessive diarrhea with substantial fluid loss,dehydration and, if you have kidney function issues, serious consequences such as confusion,other neurological and cardiac rhythm disturbances. Notify your physician and get instructions or call the poison center to get advice.
