Pain is the issue.: I assume you are having pain in the front of your knee that wasn't  resolved with a procedure, perhaps, a lateral release, If this is the case, some patients require a more complicated procedure assuming you have failed a course of physical therapy.

i have a bone spur on top of the patella? i know it will have to be removed, but i am worried about the patella tendon. how is this surgery performed?

Do not worry: A bone spur on top of the patella is a sign of chronic inflammation of the quadriceps tendon and may be seen in patients that sustain a quadriceps tendon rupture--most often men in their 40s and 50s.  Most bone spurs rarely involve the joint and their presence alone does not warrant surgery.
With physical activity, proper warm up and a cool down period that includes gentle stretching can help.

i have had left knee pain off and on for years and several years back a procedure was performed where shaving of some bone spurs was done.  my knee pain has come and gone since.  however, about 1 year ago, i injured it by lifting my leg and with some force met the corner of a wall with the top of my knee.  x-rays showed no break.  doctor prescribed pt, which did not help.  pain has continued/worsened.  there is now bruising (black and blue) on the inside of my knee. is this worrisome?

Knee pain: I assume you have an orthopedic surgeon who can examine and advise you. An MRI of the knee would seem advisable to look for internal derangement of the joint. I don't think that a simple xray would give you enough information.

Yes: Yes, you can definitely have some degree of instability in your knee/tibia, particularly if you have an "acl deficient" knee.  I would not hesitate to discuss directly with your surgeon.

A : A "bone spur" is a symptom of another process.  On its own, it is not a problem.  Most of the bone spurs we see around the knee are from arthritis.

Arthritis can be managed without surgery for many people.  You can try things like bracing, physical therapy, injections, anti-inflammatories, heat, ice, creams and rubs, and glucosamine/chondroitin sulfate.  If you cannot manage your symptoms without surgery, then some form of knee replacement can be helpful.  You may or may not be a candidate depending on your age, weight, mobility, and general health.

Other causes of knee pain, unrelated to the spur, include meniscal tears, acl tears, ligament tears, and various benign growths.  Only very rarely do cancers occur around the knee and they are more common in adolescents, though still rare.

You are correct that you need to see an orthopaedic surgeon.  He/she should be able to answer your questions once you have been fully evaluated.

Bonespur knee: I'd visit your doctor and begin by getting an exam and x-ray of your knee so that you can get a specific diagnosis. That is how you can best determine  if medical treatment ( medication, physical therapy, special exercises)  would suffice. Surgery would only be needed if your symptoms continued to progress despite this medical program.

Technically yes: It can be done. However, a bone spur is usually the result of osteoarthritic changes and is not the cause of the pain. Studies have shown that arthroscopic surgery to 'clean things up' and repair minor cartilage damage usually provides no more than very temporary benefit.

10 weeks post-op left achilles tendon surgery. i had tendonitis and heel bone spurs removed. and i still have pain and swelling. is this normal?

Lets say it : Is possible. Visit your surgeon, ask them if everything is okay and what the plan of action is. Perhaps some physical therapy might be a good idea.

Knee muscle strength: After surgery to remedy what i suspect is patellofemoral syndrome, the focus is not to improve your knee bone strength, but to improve the strength of the muscles that stabilize your kneecap.  See physical therapy, which should include terminal knee extension exercises targeting the 'vmo' muscle. Maintaining bone mass depends on adequate calcium and vitamin d intake and weight bearing exercise.
