severe insomnia since last two to three months.. i got my blood tests done and my serum ferritin came out to be v low around 5..are they related?

Insomnia : Low ferritin levels indicate that you are at a higher risk of having iron deficiency anemia. Although there is no link between iron deficiency and insomnia there is a relationship between restless leg syndrome and low iron levels. In restless leg syndrome patients feel a need to move their legs when in bed keeping them from sleeping.  Check with your doctor to see if replacing iron is necessary.

just had blood tests done and have results everything looks normal but this one dont is this a abnormal result? if so what could be the cause and is it extremely high? normal range says between 0.8-1.5 my serum inorganic phosphate is 1.16?

: You have posted numbers  that show the value is in the normal range. It is certainly not high.  There is no reason for concern. If you have concerns discuss it with your doc.

i do hormonal blood tests just for check, the serum cortisol level only in am i do it is 5.86ug/dl. normal range 6.2_ 19.4 ,so why the cortisol level is slightly below normal range and what are factors that regulate it as anxiety drug taking& others?

: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, the slightly low reading on a random test is not a cause for concern.

Need more info: What are the actual values? If you are otherwise healthy, you can ignore slightly elevated lab tests. It you wish to know why it would be prudent to discuss it with the doctor who ordered the tests.

my blood tests showed anion gap, serum 9 mmol/l and iron % saturation 22%.  any connection or reason for concern?  both flagged as low.

Accepted Answer

Abnormal labs: Low anion gap is usually a lab error, so it is spuriously low. A recheck would probably "correct" it. Low iron saturation cannot be interpreted by itself, as there are additional measurements needed to compliment the picture such as red blood cell count, hemoglobin, hematocrit, iron level and iron binding capacity as well as ferritin level.

does low serum globulin affect blood tests that assess immunoglobulin levels? for example if an illness caused proteinuria, could a disease actually cause the test for it to be falsely negative?

If I follow you: If you have low proteins and then get a disease that causes protein in your urine, could a test be falsely negative ?  Well a smart doc would know to order quantitative  protien and then it could be interpreted in light of known low immunoglobulins . Some people always spill small amounts of protein, most do not. Doc must know this info too. It's complicated.

Non specific.: just about anything can cause these results which are pretty nonspecific.  if you are feeling well they may just be normal variation.  Is this related to the reason you take Heparin or Zofran (ondansetron)?

i have been diagnosed with osteoporosis and my serum protein blood tests have come back showing a monoclonal igg lambda paraprotein? could this be due to the osteoporosis in my bones or something serious?

: Osteoporosis does not cause a monoclonal paraprotein that remains to be further investigated. Usually workup is completed with the help of an oncologist as such conditions will need to be at least observed properly in time.

: By those results it seemed you had a 24 hour urine collection besides the routine blood test. The creatinine clearance is much higher (better) than the GFR is probably due to overcollection. All numbers are fine but you probably concern with a high BUN. BUN result varies a lot, not a good marker for kidney function. It is high with steroid use, high protein intake or low volume when tested.

blood tests showed sodium 141, potassium 4, chloride 99, bicarb 22 which gives me a high anion gap of 24. as i am fatigued could this indicate cancer?

No: and your anion gap is only 20, according to the numbers given, (usually potassium isn't included in the equation). Anion gap calculation isn't used to screen for cancer, rather metabolic problems, commonly acidosis, and several disease contribute, as kidney, gastrointestinal (diarrhea), drugs, diabetes, etc. Lab errors need to be excluded, and most important is  clinical correlation, u r fine
