: The suprapubic catheter is usually changed by a healthcare personnel in the US. I do not know what the protocol in Canada is. However, if you are allowed to insert suprapubic catheter then you should be trained thoroughly. In the US, only are patients trained to do self uretheral catheterization (straight cath).

Good: It is good that you are being looked after on a spine ward as symptoms point to something damaging or putting pressure on the spinal cord or the nerves exiting the spinal cord. A chronic infection could be the cause but it could also be a disc problem, bony overgrowth in the spinal canal, etc. The most important thing is that you are in the right place and a proper work-up has begun.

Anatomy: Nope. Estrogen or Progesterone or spironolactone does not change your bladder anatomy.

It should not: Bcg is a vaccine that used to treat superficial bladder cancer. I don't think it would give you any significant  complication with your recent aortic tissue valve replacement.

i had a ct scan for an upcoming knee replacement and in the findings they listed i had an underdistention of the urinary bladder. is this something i should be concerned about? i thank you in advance for your help?

: The radiologist often uses the fluid in the bladder as a reference to compare to other abdominal contents. If your bladder is not distended it means you emptied it before the study. It does not imply any bad or worrisome issue.

Depends: It depends on the age of the patient, how many levels are involved, if instability is present, and how much degeneration is present in the spine.  It would be best to have a spine surgeon fully evaluate you with imaging studies and a physical exam.  There are people that would not qualify for disc replacements and a fusion would be a better option.

This : This is a very complicated question and could be the topic of an extensive ongoing research. Presently, hip replacements are either metal-on-poly or metal-on-metal. Poly refers to polyethylene, a plastic like synthetic material commonly used to like the socket of the hip joint. The ball part, also called the proximal femur, is typical metallic, and is usually made of an amalgam of cobalt and chromium. If the socket is metallic as well, this would be called a metal-on-metal prosthesis. There are numerous advantages and disadvantages to each. Metal-on-metal is valued for its presumed durability, but many have cited concerns about the metal ion wear particles that are created through normal use and get into the bloodstream and are excreted by the kidneys. Metal-on-poly produces polyethylene wear particles, which are larger in size and less numerous. These do not get into blood circulation. They do however trigger cells in the immune system to release inflammatory mediators that can lead to loosening of the implants, which can cause the joint to fail. Ceramic implants are also available. These are made of glasslike substances that are very hard and do not produce much wear at all. However, they are prone to catastrophic failure by cracking, and as a result are not commonly used in this country.

Many options: There are many choices when it comes to the materials used for hip replacement surgery.  The most thorough study of implants materials to date comes from the Australian Joint Replacement Registry- an extremely large collection of data from thousands of surgeries.  The best material at this time seems to be Oxidized Zirconium (known as Oxinium) with highly cross-linked polyethylene.

Compared : Compared to traditional hip replacement, resurfacing is more bone preserving but not necessarily better or worse.  More important in my opinion is the position in which the implant is placed and the technique and approach that is used.  Another important consideration is the material properties of the implant such as metal vs ceramic vs poly, etc.  Considering the recent data on metal on metal implants i would be less inclined to recommend resurfacing since it is limited to metal on metal implants...
