Prob okay, but...: hairy black tongue can occur in infants because of infection or failure of the tongue papillae (bumps) to properly shed their cells like it should. it is important to distinguish if the black could be melanin, since that might indicated a skin disorder. black 'spots' can also be a sign of a genetic condition, so it is important to have this evaluated further, likely with biopsy.

Spots: Please see your pediatric dentist or pediatrician. Without a description of the spots (color size) it is hard to say. The most common in children is thrush and is easily treated. Be sure all the toys are clean especially toys that enter the mouth and again please see your health care professional.

Dont think so: This doesnt sound like a good idea, at all. Thrush is a fungal infection and needs a proper anti fungal medication that can be prescribed by a physician. Baby acne i will leave for another physician to comment on. But i can say with great confidence that rubbing a pee-soaked diaper on a babys face/tongue will not solve the problem. Probably a bad idea.

Nursing: See if the hospital where you delivered your baby has a lactation consultant. I'm assuming the ranitidine is for GERD. Make sure that the baby hasn't outgrown the present dose, by rechecking with your pediatrician. They can also rule out any other problems that might be causing this.

May be thrush: Thrush is a whitish coating inside the mouth (on the tongue, inside cheeks, the gums, etc...) caused by an overgrowth of yeast (candida). Candida is normally in people&#x27;s mouths, but in small amounts so is invisible. Thrush is non-urgent if a baby is behaving fine, but should be evaluated by a primary care doctor who can prescribe medication if needed (if no over-the-counter treatment available).
