A member asked:

Infant black tongue. tried nystatin, then swabbed for culture and tried fluconazole, no yeast on culture. dr said iron stain? doesn't get supplement.

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Prob okay, but...: hairy black tongue can occur in infants because of infection or failure of the tongue papillae (bumps) to properly shed their cells like it should. it is important to distinguish if the black could be melanin, since that might indicated a skin disorder. black 'spots' can also be a sign of a genetic condition, so it is important to have this evaluated further, likely with biopsy.
