Natural intervention: There are no biological markers for the diagnoses of bipolar disorder or the other psychiatric disorders &amp; so such a diagnosis is never for certain. Furthermore, there are a myriad of possible side effects from the psychiatric drugs, many of which mimic mental illness. So for a start I encourage you to have your friend examined by a Family Doctor or Internist to rule out any medical conditions.

Bipolar: Mood stabilizers such as lithium, lamictal, depakote, tegretol. Also psychotropics such as abilify, seroquel, risperdal, geodon (ziprasidone). Also antidepressants cautiously for depressed phases. Also anti-anxiety medications such as Ativan for agitation.

You can...but?: It is your life, your body. If you go to a respected psychiatrist who recommends meds you have a choice. You could go for a second opinion. You could try different psychotherapeutic techniques. It depends upon how crippling the condition is to you. But you always have the choice of refusing treatment.

Treat bipolar: Mood stabilizing medications are most commonly prescribed for the treatment of bipolar. These include lithium, some anticonvulsants such as depakote,  trileptal, and tegretol. Atypical antipsychotics have also been shown to be effective with bipolar, such as seroquel (quetiapine) and risperdal, to name a few. Sometimes, antidepressants are prescribed with a mood stabilizer.

Many: Lithium, depakote, olanzapine, which helps with severe or psychotic depression, aripiprazole, risperidone, ziprasidone, Clozapine (should be used  infrequently), some ssri's & Lamotrigine (watch out for serious rash), which seems to be more effective for depressive than manic symptoms.  Always consult w/ prescribing doc before changing/adding meds since BP is a serious disorder.

Yes and no.: Does "better" mean improved or cure?  There is no cure.  If you have it, you have it for life.  One has mood swings so one could get better with or without medication.  Medication can improve the swings and also prevent them.  The major problem with a Biploar is their going into denial when in a normal phase and stopping their medication. That depends: If the person is acutely manic than an atypical antipsychotic may be a good choice.  Mood stabilizers are helpful for long term treatment.  Different people respond better to one drug than another. It is very individual. Many of my patients are happy with Lamictal as well as abilify (aripiprazole). But that doesn't mean they are the best.

It varies greatly: I  have patients in my practice I have been seeing once a year for 21 years and they have been stable on lithium the whole time. Others have to be seen every other week and it seems like we are constantly chasing symptoms.
